Don’t Bug Me!

March 16, 2012

We’ve had unusually warm weather here in the Midwest this year. In fact, it’s March, and not only are flowers blooming and green leaves bursting forth from the trees, but the creepy crawlers are already “bugging” us. And, much to my dismay, my husband discovered this year’s first nasty spider in the basement. Anyone who knows me knows how bug-phobic I can be.

As health-conscious common scents moms, we don’t want toxic pesticides harming our families! And why should we? We can repel bugs (and even sometimes kill them) with essential oils that are not only safe, but are good for us! Below is a list of oils that will help solve most of our pest problems around the house and garden…

As a bug repellant for your skin, mix 20 drops with a few ounces of water and put in a squirt bottle. Spray your body and clothing with your homemade mixture. You may also spray bedding. If you’re going to be camping, you may want to mix the oils of your choice with a carrier oil and rub into your feet and legs. Also, spray your shoes and pants well.

For bug bites or stings, Lavender or the Purification blend work great!

Power Tools: Why Real Men Use Essential Oils

March 15, 2012

I’ve noticed that more women use essential oils than men. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s because women are more scent orientated than men. For instance, how many men do you see getting roses or cologne for their birthdays? Not many. While I know a lot of guys who enjoy things that smell good (especially food), most guys would rather have tools.

Also, and I’m not entirely sure why, but, in many families, it seems women are more interested in issues of health and wellness than their husbands. While Mom talks about salads and organic chicken, Dad winks at the kids and sings of hamburgers and French fries. I won’t venture into my theories of why this is, or talk too much about why it shouldn’t be this way; but, I will say there is hope for the men in your life. Men should be leading their families in all that is good and healthy, and that includes physical health and wellness…and even essential oils!

Maybe it’s because we who understand (and embrace the fact) that men and women are different have seen this modern Fred Flintstone phenomenon among men and just chalked it all up to the differences between men and women. As if women like what is good, healthy, and natural and men like what is bad, unhealthy and synthetic. How insulting to men! I think we’ve been looking at it all wrong. Maybe some men have too! Essential oils aren’t feminine; they are tools—tools the Creator gave to us at Creation to accomplish many tasks. (Did you hear that guys? Tools—power tools!)

We see throughout Scripture that essential oils were used for healing. This is one reason why James wrote in his epistle that if someone is sick, we should call the elders of the church—the elders, not their wives. And the elders should anoint the sick with oil and pray!

Essential oils were brought to Jesus at his birth by men—wise men (Matthew 2:11)! And before his pending arrest and crucifixion, Jesus was anointed with the essential oil of Spikenard and enjoyed its soothing affects. Spikenard is known to calm the nerves and reduce stress (though I can’t say I enjoy the scent of this particular oil).

Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. (John 12:3)

Essential oils were also used by the officers of the Roman army. On the eve of a battle, the officers were massaged with a special blend of essential oils (this recipe is what Young Living’s blend, Valor, is based on). The aroma of the oils would calm their nerves and help them to focus their thoughts as they prepared for their martial duties. I suspect the oils did much more for their health than we even realize!

In the modern era, it was a French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé who rediscovered the healing properties of essential oils. His work has been instrumental in bringing these gifts into modern focus.

When I first started using essential oils about 12 years ago, my husband used to tease me about my “snake oils.” But guess who got the last laugh when he started to see that they worked? Slowly, he began to come to me with various ailments, asking if I had an oil for this or that. Then I started to hear him telling other people, “Oh, I bet Stacy has an oil for that!.” He discovered that essential oils were more than scented placebos – they were powerful aromatic medicines!

My husband, James, now believes that men should use essential oils! They bring clarity of mind, lower stress levels, and calm unsteady nerves. They boost virility, bring relief to sore muscles, and offer hundreds of other daily health benefits. Essential oils and essential oil-based products promote a level of health and wellness that has been lost in our era of pharmaceutical dependency. Real men love essential oils because essential oils are power tools!

Here are just a few of my husband’s favorites…

Peppermint is our most used essential oil! Over a year ago, my husband, James, was drinking 5 to 6 cups of coffee each day. Then, he started drinking peppermint water. He adds 2 drops of peppermint to 20 ounces of water and sips it during the day, and loves it! His coffee consumption has dropped to 1 to 2 cups, his concentration has improved, his allergies are under control, and he has been able to enjoy a good night’s sleep. He also uses it (along with NingXia Red) on long road trips instead of sugary, dye-filled, caffeine-infused energy drinks!

Lemon is a staple around here. James likes to put a drop or two in his water at dinner to aid in digestion. Not only does it taste great, but it keeps the kidneys working well and helps to alkalize the body.

Sandalwood is high in sesquiterpenes and has been researched in Europe for its ability to oxygenate a part of the brain known as the pineal gland, the seat of our emotions. The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, which enhances deep sleep. Sandalwood also supports the nerves and circulation and is used for skin revitalization.  James applies a drop or two near his cheek bones each night. He is able to breathe better and relax. This oil also happens to be my very favorite scent as a cologne! So, I love it when he uses it before retiring for the night!

Cypress, or one of the blends that use it as a base, has been helpful to James when he needs to study. It’s also good for circulation.

Ginger is a great oil to help with nausea or dizziness associated with motion sickness. While he does not travel like he used to in years past, it is still a good oil to have on hand for long trips.

Frankincense is one that James uses to anoint the sick. It has been considered a holy anointing oil throughout church history. Frankincense is now being researched and used therapeutically in some hospitals. Frankincense is stimulating and elevating to the mind, and helps overcome stress and despair.

And then, there are the many oil blends. Here are his favorites in that category…

Deep Relief and PanAway – These are both oil blends specially formulated to relieve muscle soreness and tension. This is very helpful after a day of yard work…or playing ball with the children!

Valor is an empowering combination of therapeutic-grade essential oils that works with both the physical and emotional aspects of the body to increase feelings of strength, courage, and clarity in the face of adversity or challenge. This blend is based on an oil recipe used by the Romans before a battle.

Thieves was created from research about four thieves during the 15th-century plague who used cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics to protect themselves while robbing plague victims. Thieves is a proprietary blend of pure essential oils tested at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, and found to have a 99.96 percent effective rate against airborne bacteria. James likes to diffuse this blend in his basement office both for its pleasant aroma and for cleansing and oxygenating the air.

DiGize  – James keeps this important oil blend on hand for almost any digestive issue that may come up.

Other oils favored by men: Vetiver, Jasmine, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Transformation, and Abundance.

And lastly, there is the real energy drink, NingXia Red. James enjoys this naturally delicious, nutrient-infused wolfberry drink every morning. NingXia Red combines the finest whole Ningxia wolfberries, blueberries, raspberries, red grapes and lemon and orange essential oils. And it contains fiber, protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. It is not only delicious, it is a powerful antioxidant-rich infusion which offers health, energy, and longevity!

So, for his birthday this year, instead of buying him a chain saw, get him started on essential oils; that way he’ll have the strength to use a manual saw, which is much cheaper and better for him.

Ok…on second thought, don’t let him read this!

Soothing Relief for Varicose Veins

March 7, 2012

The essential oils mentioned in this post refer only to Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. Click HERE to learn why it’s important never to use lower quality oils on or in your body.

During my later pregnancies, I suffered a lot from varicose veins. I can still recall the itching, burning, heat and the throbbing that made it feel as though my legs would explode. I slept with my legs elevated, which was not all that much fun with a baby sitting on my lungs. I did find some relief with prescription compression hose, Vitamin E, and  an essential oil blend that was my best friend. And it was all worth it, I might add! Babies have a way of putting everything in perspective.

Anyway, I thought I’d share my oil blend, which by the way works great for hemorrhoids too!

Varicose Vein Bath (for a deep-water bath, double this recipe)

1/2 Cup Epsom Salt
4-5 drops Geranium
2 drops Lavender
1 drops Cypress

Mix together well before sprinkling into a bath. I always ended the bath with a cool water rinse (at least on my legs).

Then I would apply the following oil blend, rubbing it gently on my legs before placing cool wash cloths around problem areas.

Varicose Vein Blend

1 T. sweet almond oil
4-5 drops Geranium
2 drops Lavender
1 drop Cypress

The Varicose Vein Blend also works well on hemorrhoids. I always applied it neat (undiluted, without the almond oil), but I had a friend who said it was too much for her. Therefore, you  may want to try it diluted, as in the recipe above first.

Mom’s Homemade Toothpaste

February 26, 2012

Toothpaste should taste good; and it should taste good because it contains natural, plant-based ingredients. This recipe is super, super easy and inexpensive. Even my youngest children can make it.

I have this weird thing with gagging when I brush my teeth (it’s really bad when I’m pregnant). If I’m brushing my teeth and my husband is at his sink brushing his teeth, and he walks away from the sink, I start gagging. If he starts talking while he’s brushing his teeth, I gag. If the sink starts to fill with water and I see toothpaste floating around in it, I gag. If I think too hard about the fact that I’m brushing my teeth, I gag.

I usually have to just close my eyes and think of something else while I brush. Yeah, I’m a blast at the dentists office.

So, it’s very important to me that toothpaste not only taste good, but that I know the ingredients are wholesome. I don’t want to sit there brushing my teeth, thinking about all the poison I’m probably ingesting.

Read The 5 Hidden Dangers in Toothpaste

My son, William, sweet child that he is, loves my toothpaste! Recently, we had run out of my homemade paste and my husband grabbed an old tube of Tom’s for him to use. William said, “But, Daddy, I want Mommy’s toothpaste!” Yep, and I didn’t pay him a thing.

So, here you go. I’m sharing my recipe. Feel free to tweak it to suit your own tastes; but, since you’re using it in your mouth, please make sure you only use Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils.

Mom’s Homemade Toothpaste

3-4 T. vegetable glycerin (food grade) or coconut oil

6T. Baking Soda (aluminum free)

2 tsp. Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild Liquid Castile Soap (unscented)

4 drops stevia or 1 tsp. xylitol (xylitol is supposed to prevent tooth decay!)

20 drops therapeutic grade peppermint essential oil

1-2 drops therapeutic grade Thieves essential oil blend

If using Xylitol as the sweetener, I mix it with the Castile soap first, so that it has a chance to dissolve. I don’t like my toothpaste to turn out grainy. However, it may be that it would dissolve anyway, I just haven’t taken the chance. Then I mix all the ingredients together with a whisk.

Pour it into a glass jar. Any glass jar will work, even a plain old mason jar; but, a decorative one will make you feel good. :-)

Okay, here is what slowed me down in getting this post up. I couldn’t find a convenient way of storing my homemade toothpaste. First, I tried a plastic squeeze icing bottle. Then a friend reminded me that it’s not a good idea to store essential oils in plastic. So, I found a really cute glass soap dispenser. Well, the toothpaste was too thick for it, and I almost ruined my dispenser!

I wanted healthy, but I also wanted convenient. Finally, I settled on a cute little glass jar from Hobby Lobby (a mason jar would work too), and I keep a jelly jar filled with Popsicle sticks right beside it for loading the toothbrush (so the contents of the jar don’t get contaminated with bacteria from your toothbrush).

So. there you go. You have no excuse. This takes a total of about 3 1/2 minutes to make, and your kids can help!

Experiment with other essential oils to suit your taste. Suggestions include Clove, Thieves, rosemary, or Spearmint.

Where Do Your Oils Come From?

February 23, 2012

Have you ever wondered how important it is to “know” your essential oil company? In addition to the quality of the plant, the distillation process is so important…

“Here is an example of the importance of precise timing during distillation. Cypress has 280 known chemical constituents, and all 280 constituents must be present for Cypress to have medicinal and healing potency. If it is distilled for 20 hours, only 20 of the 280 properties are released. If distilled for 26 hours, none of the properties are released. Most Cypress available in the US market is distilled for about 3 1/2 hours. The correct length of time for distilling Cypress is 24 hours, releasing all 280 properties.” Debra Raybern

Taken from the Bio/Tech News newsletter:

“About 98% of essential oils produced in the world today are not intended for serious, therapeutic and/or medicinal use. Most are produced for the perfume, cosmetics, and food industries. Therefore, criteria like purity, potency, organic, etc. are not important for these uses.

Because the raw materials and the extraction process for Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are so expensive, many oils on the market have been cut, diluted and adulterated in various ways. Sad to say, some marketers bottle these poor quality oils and sell them for therapeutic purposes to unsuspecting consumers.

A Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil is more than a “certified organic” oil. It is an oil that is complete in the makeup of its constituents, having the fragrance, frequency, and chemistry that are necessary to give it all of its unique, therapeutic qualities and effects.

As we have already mentioned above, a quality, Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil is chemically complex and all of its sometimes fragile components need to be present after distillation of the final product. This requires not only a lot of understanding of the makeup of the oil on the production side but also a great deal of time and expense to care for the proper species of plant.

To insure proper potency, plants should be grown on virgin land, uncontaminated by chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides and away from pollution sources. The plant materials must be kept free of petrochemical herbicides and pesticides, since these can react with the essential oil during distillation.

The soil should be conditioned with enzymes, trace minerals, and organic bio-solids, since plants lacking in certain minerals and nutrients yield oils low in therapeutic value. Irrigation should be done with reservoir, watershed or mountain stream water.

Plants need to be harvested at the proper time of the season to insure highest potency. Sometimes even a few hours can make the difference. For example, German Chamomile needs to be harvested in the morning since it then yields an oil with far more azulene than when it is harvested later in the day.

The steam distillation method of extracting the oils from the plants requires careful and proper low temperature and pressure monitoring. Too high of temperature or too much pressure can be deleterious to the fragile aromatic molecules of the plant. In addition, batch sizes need to be kept small and the distillation chamber must be made out of food-grade stainless steel instead of copper or aluminum to avoid reactions with the oils.

Producing pure, Therapeutic Grade Essential oils is a costly venture. The methods required are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it often requires several hundred, sometimes even thousands of pounds of raw plant material to produce a single pound of essential oil. For example, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of rose oil, and it takes three tons of Melissa to produce one pound of oil.”
