I love my porch; and I really love enjoying it with my honey. But, I really, really hate bugs. I mean really. I’m fairly certain bugs exist for my ongoing sanctification, but I still try to avoid them. Did I mention that I hate bugs?
One good way to repel insects naturally, without chemicals, is by using essential oils. You’ll need to keep in mind that not all essential oils are created equal. If you want it to really work, you need the good stuff.
This easy recipe is terrific for making beeswax candles for your own backyard patio, or as a great hostess gift for a summer barbecue.
There are plenty of molds you can choose! Antique mason jars, little terra cotta pots, tiny tin pails from the dollar store, empty soap tins, used jelly jars – get creative!
The “Don’t Bug Me” Beeswax Candle
You will need:
- Molds of your choice (See above ideas. And remember, the size of the mold determines how many candles you can make.)
- Beeswax (1 lb.)
- 1-2 T. of a carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil etc.)
- A candle wick (cut it a little longer than the length of your mold)
- 20-30 drops (total) Young Living essential oils (See insect repellent list below. You may choose more than one oil.)
Over low heat, slowly melt the beeswax and carrier oil in a double boiler to approximately 170 degrees. Remove from heat. Add your desired essential oil(s). Place the wick in your desired mold. Pour the beeswax mixture into the mold, making sure you hold the wick in a centered position during pouring. Let stand until wax is firm.
A Few Essential Oils for Repelling Insects
- Cinnamon Bark
Tip: Purification is a blend that contains citronella. Personally, I don’t like the scent of citronella; but, I was always torn because I knew it worked so well. However, this blend utilizes the benefits of citronella, while offering a fresh lemony scent. Ingredients: Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia) lavandin (Lavandula x hybrida), and myrtle (Myrtus communis)
