Living out Biblical Principles: A Young Man’s Prayer of Chastity

Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded… (Titus 2:6) Abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter… (1 Thessalonians 4:3–6)

“I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?…Does He not see my ways, and count all my steps?” (Job 31:1, 4)
Has He not said that marriage is honorable among all (Hebrews 13:4) and that the man who follows a seductress is as a fool headed for the stocks (Proverbs 7:22)?

Help me, Lord, to honor marriage—my own, as well as the marriages of those around me. Help me to love my wife (or future wife) by saving my eyes, thoughts, and body (1 Cor. 7:2-4) for her alone.

Help me to love and respect the women in my life. Help me to be on guard, and to see each woman as a person made in the image of God, and not as an object for me to use or enjoy. Help me not to use or defraud the young women I know by discouraging their chastity and rewarding immodesty with flattery or attention that is aimed at satisfying my own selfish ego or desires. Help me to be a good brother, protecting and honoring women. Remind me, Lord, that it’s not all about me.

My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands within you…that they may keep you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words.” (Proverbs 7:1–5)

Help me to view the women in my life as mothers and sisters, and to encourage them in godliness by looking for ways to promote friendship and chastity between us both.

Most of all, Lord, help me to honor you—help me to hallow your name and not to cause it to be blasphemed (Ezekiel 36:23); so that when unbelievers see the way I glorify You by loving and respecting women, they will see a picture of You and Your beloved Church (Eph. 5:25; 1 Peter 3:7).

Love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own… (1 Corinthians 13:4–5)
