The Box…
A box arrived early this morning – I wonder what’s inside.
I’m gettin’ my cowboy boots on! This looks exciting!
They’re alive…and cheeping!
“My sisters are crazy! They’re HOLDING the little creatures!”
The Brooder: “So these are our Plymouth Bard Rock beauties! Well, they are kind of cute!” (25 hens and 5 roosters)
Building their future mansion!

Ok. I just HAVE to know. Is the brooder finished? AND, do you have a chicken tractor and/or coop yet? : )
We got our brooder finished the day our first chicks arrived. But, the chicken tractor and/or coop? We’re at 2 years and counting and our chickens are still 100%, totally, free-ranging.
They roost in a cedar tree outside our tent (we live in a tent and a 5th wheel). There are some that think they absolutely, positively MUST lay their eggs in the tent, no matter how much dissuading and kicking out we do.
We have one hen that thinks that every vehicle that arrives is hers to try to get into. She circles and checks out windows, doors and windshields trying to get in. We have to warn all visitors to close their car up tight – or she WILL get in!
Life with free-ranging chickens….Are you joining the ranks? : )

How cute! We have chickens for the first time this year, too. We are also getting meat birds, soon (the same breed as our layers: Buff Orpington). As for the free-ranging comment above, ours are in a moveable coop. I would love to get to the point of no bought feed at all. That is my goal.
Have fun with them! :-D
There is absolutely nothing like free-ranging chickens. I loved waking up in the morning and looking out my kitchen window at all my lovely “girls”. They are beautiful…particularly Bantams…I love the different breeds walking around looking like an art display. The only downside is that they are messy, messy, messy, but it is worth it.
Now when we get our chicks (if we ever move….) y’all can give us advice on how to build a coop and take care of them!
We got two Barred Rocks too, and 2 White Rocks, and 2 Reds. Isn’t it fun?
Cute pics!
How fun! Enjoy your new project! I absolutely love chickens and hope to have my own in the future.
I can’t wait to see how this goes!! My husband has decided we need to get chickens, so I’ll be looking forward to upcoming posts on your new additions!

Oh, I want some! I’ve always wanted to raise chickens for meat & eggs. Maybe one day…
This is my eighth year selling enough eggs to pay for the feed.Being a home educator and with our church a half hour away it has been the the best way to meet folks. So my chickens are in the ministry!
Every year has a new challenge including snakes eating the eggs, predators of all kinds(cats being the worst) , weather conditions and this year being the cost of feed.
My chickens get extra protein from the whey when I make cheese from the goat milk. Once my customers taste home grown eggs they can’t stand store bought eggs!
Chickens are highly entertaining with no commercials.I won’t get started with the stories.
They know their job description well. I never have to beg them to lay eggs.
I encourage everyone to sell eggs not only to help with the expenses but to also use it for a ministry.
