Successful Christianity: Just Add Water
This past Lord’s Day, I preached from a difficult text, Ecclesiastes 7:13-18. This section presents a number of challenges for the reader. We are presented with such things as:
- God has bent some things that we cannot straighten.
- Our days of prosperity and adversity are appointed by God.
- Some righteous men die early, while some wicked men live to old age.
- We should be neither overly righteous nor overly wise.
Here is one of the most interesting verses in this text:
Ecclesiastes 7:16: Do not be overly righteous, nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself?
Many of us, after becoming Christians, heard from family and friends, “You’re going overboard on this God thing. Everything in moderation.” At first glance, it may seem that Ecclesiasts 7:16 is in agreement with this statement. However, as you will see
below, this is not the meaning of the text at all…Living the Christian life is not always easy. We cannot follow a few easy steps and find peace and success. We cannot pray a certain prayer to avoid trials and tribulation. We are not in control.
