A Housewife is as a Housewife Does
I know we discussed it recently, but I thought through it a bit more and have decided to call myself a housewife (though there’s certainly nothing wrong with the many other terms out there).
The word “housewife” became unpopular when housewives felt pressure to defend their calling against the denigrating attacks of the feminists. Since then, we’ve come up with all kinds of fancy-shmansy names—domestic engineer, household manager, homemaker, even stay-at-home mom.
Nonetheless, since I’m not a janitor or a salaried supervisor, and since the word homemaker forgets to mention that I’m a wife, and since I’m a mother that doesn’t always stay-at-home, I think I’ll stick with something easy and right for who I am. Housewife sounds good.
It’s a simply logical word and I like it, so I’m taking it back. June Cleaver isn’t using it anymore anyway.

Well said!
Amen! I love the title of the book. When will it be published?
The publisher is finishing up the editing now. The book should be out this fall! I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks for saying this. I agree. And I can’t wait for the book either.
You’re right! And I think from now on, I’m going to sign my emails with that title in tow :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! I think it is very important for us to consider the words that we use and the titles that we give ourselves. Some time ago, our Pastor gave us an awesome article called “Watch Your Language!” by E. Bradley Beevers. It was taken from The Journal of Biblical Counseling – Volume XII – Number 3 – Spring 1994. It is well worth the read, if you have access to it. It talks about the necessity of using Biblical language to express ourselves. In light of that article, help meet seems to be a nice Biblical term that sums it all up. I wonder if people would know what it meant?
Well, those are just some of my thoughts on the matter. Thanks for bringing our attention to our title and provoking some thought ;)
Warmly,
